The History of Donkieskraal
Donkieskraal’s story began during the Anglo-Boer War when the great-grandfather of the Laubscher family cleverly hid his cattle in the mountains to protect them from the English forces. His efforts were so successful that the enemy never found the livestock. After the war, the English requested his assistance to transport goods over the mountain to Leipoldtville and Lambert’s Bay. Today, parts of this historic trail are included in the hiking trails available at Donkieskraal.
Following the war, a friendly dispute between two brothers over farm names led to a humorous turn of events. One brother named his farm Perdekraal In response, the great-grandfather initially named his farm Perdekraal (Horse Enclosure). Later, he playfully changed it to Donkieskraal (Donkey Enclosure), creating a legacy that endures today.
In modern times, Pieter Laubscher, a visionary potato farmer, revolutionized agriculture in the Sandveld district by introducing groundbreaking irrigation systems that transformed the potato industry. As a family man and friend he opened the Donkieskraal mountain area in 1995 for Sunday braais with family and friends. His passion for architecture and building made him laid the first stone of what would become a cherished lodge, initially welcoming potato farmers and loved ones to enjoy the area’s unique beauty.
When the Sandberg farm was sold in 2019, the Laubscher family ensured Donkieskraal and its game-fenced area would remain part of their heritage through subdivision. The lodge still reflects Pieter Laubscher’s unique craftsmanship, visible in every stone and structure.
Annemi Laubscher, Pieter’s daughter, spent her formative years at Donkieskraal, even completing her matric studies there. Since 2014, she has taken a leading role in managing the lodge. In 2021, she partnered with Madeleine Marais to continue expanding and enhancing this special destination. Together, they aim to establish Donkieskraal as one of South Africa’s premier tourism attractions, honoring its rich history and the legacy of its founder.
